Keynote Speaker

We are delighted to invite Dr. Marcia Haigis to the Omni Hotel to deliver the 2024 keynote address!

Dr. Marcia Haigis is a biochemist and mitochondria enthusiast and is currently an Associate Professor in the Department of Cell Biology at the Harvard Medical School. Her lab focuses on understanding the roles of mitochondria in human health and age-related diseases such as cancer. To achieve these goals, her lab employs a multidisciplinary approach bringing together biochemical, cellular and mouse modeling experiments.

Dr. Marcia Haigis obtained her Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 2002 from University of Wisconsin and pursued her postdoctoral studies on mitochondria metabolism at MIT. Recently, Dr. Marcia Haigis was awarded the 2023 Samsung Ho-Am Prize in Medicine for her work in discovering the importance of ammonia in the acceleration of cancer proliferation and growth.

Dr. Haigis was a leader in mapping out the Mitochondrial Sirtuin Network which is available on her lab’s website. The principles of her findings in cancer immunology and cell metabolism are now being applied to many different cancers and cell types. Dr. Marcia Haigis’s research continues to ask how mitochondria’s processes can be hijacked and used in cancer and disease.

“History is who we are and why we are the way we are” - David McCullough

We are living in a time in history where we have to examine the violence several communities have faced throughout their lives. The Experimental Medicine Graduate Students’ Society (EMGSS), as part of McGill University, acknowledges that the land where our Annual McGill Biomedical Graduate Conference (AMBGC) happens, is the traditional and unceded territory of the Kanien’keha:ka. The Kanien'kehá:ka Nation is a founding nation of the Haudenosaunee/People of the Longhouse (Iroquois) Confederacy which is also comprised of the Seneca, Tuscarora, Cayuga, Onondaga, and Oneida Nations. EMGSS honours, respects and recognizes these Nations. We encourage everyone to understand the history of this land. For more information visit the McGill Indigenous Initiatives website.
